Don’t want to have your students read an article? SJK Academy videos work through research topics using lots of visuals in a blackboard format. They are < 5 minutes long and can help your students see what real research is like.

We are excited to announce a brand-new SJK Interactive lesson about space food! In this lesson, students learn how astronauts on the International Space Station grow their own food in space. They will discover what crops astronauts are growing, how plants grow differently without gravity, and whether the food is safe to eat. Students can explore real data graphs, photos, and videos, and even tour the ISS through a fun interactive map. Follow-up chat suggestions connect the lesson to exciting topics like traveling to Mars and how space technology has helped people back on Earth!

Science is Cool Conference: Free virtual conference about science in the Hawaiian Islands. We will be contributing lessons to the free Pocketlab Notebook library in support of the event.

July Pause: We will be taking a break from publishing new articles in July. This will give us a chance to regroup before another wonderful school year.

MBARI Seminar: Join SJK’s Editor-in-Chief at 11 am PST July, 22 to learn more about how adapted literature can create a meaningful meeting point for scientific research, education, and outreach. https://www.mbari.org/event/miranda-wilson/

Whale sharks have fascinated the public for decades. Dive into our newest article about these wonderful creatures, “Where do whale sharks have their babies?” Researchers know where to find adult whale sharks, but where they go to have babies has been a mystery. It turns out that most whale shark babies have been spotted near oxygen minimum zones, which might be safe from larger predators. Your students will love learning more about these iconic animals. Be sure to explore the additional resources on the article page for activities mapping sharks and investigating dead zones. You might even see a live whale shark swim by on the Georgia Aquarium Ocean Voyager Live Webcam.

Have you ever heard of treehoppers? Check out our newest article about these fascinating creatures, “Why do treehoppers have such strange body shapes?” It turns out treehoppers use helmet-shaped protrusions on their backs to create and sense electric fields. Like other animals that use electroreception (e.g., sharks), treehoppers can use this sense to distinguish friend from foe. This lesson would be a great addition to any physical science curriculum on electric fields or any ecology/evolution activity about adaptations. Make sure to also check out our recommended resources for great simulations and hands-on activities to do in class.

Announcing the release of a new SJK Interactive lesson about the health impacts of vaping! Look at the science behind this social issue for teens. Have your students explore data graphs, test their knowledge, navigate information, and watch interactive videos. Also, check out our suggestions for follow-up class discussion topics. You can find them on the bottom of the last page for all of our interactive lessons. Hint: Have students who finish early start thinking about their answers while they wait for their classmates!
