Welcome to October!
Our latest article this month is about poop. More specifically, it’s about the viruses found in the gut microbiome of a 5,300-year-old frozen mummy named Ötzi the Iceman (and other ancient humans). What better way to broach complex scientific topics such as genetics, evolution, and microbiology than a “gross” topic like human poop?
This article is part of our Gross and Disgusting Science article collection. We are confident that you and your students will enjoy any of the articles it contains. ;-)
Speaking of gross topics, check out our lesson idea on how to teach the digestive system in this hands-on lab for making poop – again. (Sorry, this has just turned out to be the theme this month!)
Finally, are you thinking about Halloween already? We have a great scientific article about zombie ants: How do some fungi turn insects into zombies? It comes in upper and lower reading-level versions (for high school and middle/junior high). It also features a podcast interview with the researcher, who tells the story of his zombie insects full-arm tattoos! See photos here.

That’s all for now. If you ever want to reach out or give us feedback, respond to this email and I will receive it personally. I wish you a great month!
